Any market support for well-bred newcomers KINDA WONDERFUL and POETIC PRINCESS, both of whom cost Rk, has to be respected.
Watch the betting! Selections: 3 Sahara Cat, 9 Disting, 6 Kinda Wonderful, 8 Poetic Princess Race 2 Race Summary: STAR PERFORMER has been costly to follow but did finish 2nd in both starts over m, so could be worth another chance.
EINSTEIN improved to finish 2nd over this course and distance last time and is likely to pose a threat.
PINK MOON receives a 2. CONNERY could get into the picture if building on the improvement of his latest outing, while CELTIC CHIEF is better than his last start suggests and isn't incapable of playing a role either.
Selections: 2 Star Performer, 5 Einstein, 7 Pink Moon, 10 Celtic Chief Race 3 Race Summary: Tricky. ELLORIX wouldn't be winning out of turn after several near misses, including her latest outing over this track and trip.
CHARLENE has the form to pose a threat while JET TO THE SUN is open to any amount of improvement on her reappearance. TRUE HORIZON and JET GREEN ought to be competitive under light weights too. ROCKING PEONIE and LADY LOXTON aren't without chances either.
Selections: 3 Ellorix, 7 Charlene, 4 Jet To The Sun, 9 Rocking Peonie Race 4 Race Summary: Tricky. Both KAAPSE KLOPSE and MOONACRES are closely matched on the form of their recent meetings with that rival so are likely to be competitive too.
EXPLOSIVE SPEED and FUTURE GEM could also get into the picture if confirming the improvement of their latest outings. She had PRINCESS OF BAYEUX and ENGLISH MISTRESS behind her last time and should confirm that form on these terms.
STATE CAPITOL progressed with each start and step up in trip last year, so is likely to be competitive on her reappearance if not in need of the run. LICKETY SPLIT should remain competitive despite a wide draw and has both the form and experience to play another leading role.
Selections: 1 Heliotrope, 10 Lickety Split, 4 State Capitol, 7 English Mistress Race 6 Race Summary: Open. TWO A PENNY has won consecutive course-and-distance outings and had several of these rivals behind her last time.
Runner-up TYPEFACE is weighted to turn the tables, so too is ETERNAL OPTIMIST from a better draw now with the benefit of a 4kg claimer.
CLOUD CHASER and CATTALEYA have a bit to find on that form but are also capable of posing more of a threat.
Last-start maiden winner BASIC MEUVERS is progressive and looks leniently treated off her current rating, while SUMMER NIGHT CITY ought to remain competitive off just a 2-point higher mark. Selections: 2 Basic Maneuvers, 6 Typeface, 5 Two A Penny, 7 Eternal Optimist Race 7 Race Summary: Wide open.
ALLEZ MORIS caught the eye when a fast-finishing 3rd over this track and trip on his Cape comeback in a stronger race last time out, so could be the value off an unchanged mark from an inside gate.
BARDOLINO and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN are proven at this level and likely to stake a claim, while this ease in grade should also bring about a more competitive showing from HOLDING THUMBS. Both UNICORN ALERT and BRIGHT GREEN are open to improvement trying this trip for the first time.
Selections: 2 Allez Moris, 6 Unicorn Alert, 3 Bardolino, 8 Kingdom Of Heaven Race 8 Race Summary: Open. THE TINKERMAN, RADICCHIO, MIGHTY MAC, NIGHT BOMBER and HAMMIES HERO are all closely matched on the form of a recent meeting in a similar contest over this track and trip.
Go wide! Selections: 5 Riverstone, 3 Radicchio, 7 The Tinkerman, 2 Hammies Hero Race 9 Race Summary: ROYAL LYTHAM has run well enough in both comeback outings to win a race of this nature, especially back against her own sex after a creditable effort over m against males last time.
However, she's worse at the weights with SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL who she beat when winning her maiden over course and distance. The latter, on the form of her last start, is also closely matched with SEEKING PEACE and BENEATH THE MOON, both of whom must be respected as a result.
TIBETAN VOYAGE and the maiden LOOK FORWARD complete the shortlist. Selections: 3 Royal Lytham, 9 Simply Beautiful, 6 Beneath The Moon, 8 Seeking Peace Race 10 Race Summary: Tricky. SILVER SCREEN has won back-to-back outings over this course and distance but is worse off at the weights with PALO QUEEN and EASY MONEY, so will have to raise her game again to complete the hat-trick.
COUNTRY TIME, 5kg better off for a 2. KHYTHERA, LA DIVINA and NIGHT VIGIL are relatively unexposed but have shown enough to suggest they could play leading roles too, despite carrying big weights.
STRATA isn't without a chance either after a belated last-start maiden victory. Selections: 5 Silver Screen, 6 Palo Queen, 4 Kythera, 9 La Divina Best Win: 3 SAHARA CAT Best Value Bet: 2 ALLEZ MORIS Best Longshot: 2 ALLEZ MORIS.
SATURDAY NIGHT'S ARMIDALE MEETING IN AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN ABANDONED DUE TO STATE OF TRACK. NEXT UP United Kingdom Greyhound Perry Barr Race 7. From barrier 2 under Purton, he looks to be competitive.
Less Is More showed improvement at a recent trial and is on his third start here after showing some ability. Always Fluke fresh up from a break and should run well. Race 7: Helios Express highly promising horse who shows nice ability and remains the one to beat.
Faces his next challenge here rising to m for the first time but appears to get a cozy run from barrier 2. Helene Feeling holding form with recent good trial and looks well. Blinkers go on and he should lap up the extra trip. Ensued ultra consistent galloper and who can play a part in the finish.
Ryan Moore takes the ride and that can offset barrier Star Mac blinkers have been added and must be a big chance. Improving all the time and is a horse on the rise. Chill Chibi resuming from a break and recent trial was good. Toughest test but has a certain x-factor quality about him.
Race 8: Galaxy Patch smart sprinter on the rise and last start placing was full of merit after racing wide. The step back in trip to m is interesting, but he should be suited by how race is run and is hard to hold out.
Invincible Sage had no luck last start but keep following. Adios last run was better than it reads and do not dismiss. Whizz Kid has early speed and can always surprise with the right run. Carroll Street a bit erratic and hard to follow but has ability and can surprise at this track and distance.
Race 9: Noble Pursuit winner of last two starts and looks a top chance to keep the ball rolling here. From gate 2 under Bowman, he will take holding out.
Simple Hedge has shown ability and gets his chance to win here with a gear change and Moore riding from gate 4. Flamingo Trillion looks overdue for a win and enters this race in good form. Intrepid Winner form is good and must be rated a solid chance.
Massive Sovereign interesting first starter and watch the betting odds. Purton rides from gate 1. Race Magnificent Nine video replay showed last run was very good after he copped a check and raced wide throughout, sticking on well in the straight.
Comes into a much better gate and looks the winner. Superb Kid last start placing was full of merit, nice effort and form is very good. Blue Marlin racing consistently of late and expect another big run.
He should secure the right run in transit from barrier 4 under Bowman. Excel Wongchoy well prepared for debut and is worth considering. Super Winner should begin fast and will be trying to lead all the way.
Both those races are Gr 1s and there is also the Gr 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes to look forward to. Sandringham is a shoe-in on paper in the SA Classic, but the m trip will be new territory for him. His sire Gimmethegreenlight was ostensibly a miler, who was effective over m, and his dam Townsend by Captain Al won a Gr 2 and a Gr 3 over m and a Listed race over m.
The other Gr 1 winner Townsend produced was the sprinter Eden Roc. However, Townsend has also produced a horse by Dynasty who has won over m. Sandringham did take quite a hold early in the Gauteng Guineas, but can be forgiven for that because he was relatively fresh after a layoff.
William Iron Arm is by William Longsword out of a Galileo mare and will relish the step up in trip. This long-strider has scope for further improvement and is drawn well in five. Storm Brasco ran on very well in the straight. He is by Pathfork out of a Fort Wood mare and is drawn well in four and could be the dark horse.
Barbaresco will also relish the trip being by Gimmethegreenlight out of Fort Wood mare Negroamaro, who was runner up in both the Gr 1 SA Filllies Classic and Gr 1 Woolavington Gimmeanotherchance was another one caught in the back group in the Guineas and he also ran on well.
However, he was nearly caught by Storm Brasco and this is m further. Pure Predator caught the eye running on in the Gr 3 London News over course and distance and from draw two he could be in the shake up. Purple Pitcher is proven over the trip and this Jonsson Workwear Dingaans winner should have come on from his Guineas fourth place finish.
He is drawn in pole and should make his presence felt. Hotarubi stayed on well from a handy position to finish runner up in the Guineas and his below par run over m earlier might have just been a flat run rather than him not staying.
However, this Vercingetorix gelding is out of a Var mare, which does create a question mark over the m trip. Guy Gibson has some class and although out of a speedy Jet Master mare who won three times from m to m he is by middle distance horse Lancaster Bomber and he has also won over m before.
Her sire Gimmethegreenlight was ostensibly a miler who was effective over middle distances, but her mother Nother Russia, who was also a goof miler, did win over m and her grandmother Mother Russia won the Gr 1 Paddock Stakes and a Gr 2 over m, among other big race victories.
So Gimme A Nother should stay the trip and should mow them down again. His recent hanging antics are a concern and he is yet to prove he stays this trip, but such is his class he should be in the shake up.
Cousin Casey should be cherry ripe and will enjoy the course and distance, but he has a tough draw. Dave The King could be right there if it pans out well for him from draw ten under Piere Strydom. He will need to bounce back from some below par recent form though.
Back In Business is well regarded, but this is a big step up in class in his first try at this trip. The distance of m in the Wilgerbosdrift SA FILLIES CLASSIC Gr 1, is of no concern to her trainer MIKE DE KOCK.
Saturday 02 March Turffontein Race 8 The race meeting gets under way at with a Maiden Juvenile Plate Fillies over m and the Justin Snaith-trained Dark Winter appears the one they all have to beat.
Dark Winter was runner-up behind Symphony In White over the course and distance a month ago and on the evidence of that form, she has both Dixieland Band and De Vlugge safely held. The big improver could be the Michelle Rix-trained Sorceress Supreme who was fifth behind Little Ballerina on WSB Met Day and a number of runners who finished behind her that day have come out to win their next starts.
Tuscan Romance is an interesting newcomer, and any market support must be respected. The opening leg of the Bipot could see Marshall Field bounce back to winning ways over what appears to be his best course and distance.
The extra furlong should not pose a problem for any of these, and Plum Pudding is fancied to confirm the form. Green Isle and Saint Brigid showed some improvement in modest line-ups last time and can get into the fray. The opening leg of the Pick 6 is a well-filled Open Maiden over m, and the race has a wide-open appearance.
Whilst there are many with chances, I am going to side with Four Jacks to finally get off the mark in his ninth attempt. I do so without a great deal of confidence but on past form he has the measure of many of his leading rivals in this Maiden Handicap.
Stable companion Go It Alone, Devil A Saint, Dawn Cloud and Apache Chief are all worthy of a mention and Pick 6 punters need to tread cautiously in this race.
The two fillies, Supreme Dream and Time for Love, are both very well handicapped in the fifth race, a Cape B Stakes over m, and I am going to row in with the official ratings and narrow my selection to this pair. There are a number of very competitive colts and geldings in the field — headed by Prevalence, Gentleman Joe and Weather King but at the weights Supreme Dream and Time for Love should have their measure.
Kelp Forest is my fancy to win the sixth race, a Cape C Stakes over m. Aldo Domeyer has been booked to ride the Adam Marcus-trained Flower Alley gelding for the first time since booting Kelp Forest home to his maiden win earlier in his career.
His form is solid, and he was desperately unlucky not to win last time when continuously baulked for a clear run. Kebonalesedi and Master of Paris rate the biggest dangers but I am going for Kelp Forest with a fair degree of confidence. In the eighth race back-in-form The Abdicator could record his fourth career victory.
The Irish-bred son of No Nay Never held on to beat the talented Future Variety at the end of January and a repeat of that effort will see him go very close to winning.
King Of The Gauls reverts to the minimum trip after failing to see out them in the Gold Rush and he can be expected to give plenty of cheek. The race meeting closes out with a very challenging Cape C Stakes over m.
The only absolute safe way of surviving this leg of the Pick 6 is to include the field 10 runners but in daring to make a selection, I am going to side with Swift Action who is very game and consistent, although both his wins to date have been recorded over m. It could be a match race between 12 SORCERESS SUPREME and 14 DARK WINTER who bring strong form to the table but there is a preference for the former.
She showed solid improvement finishing 5th in the Cape Slipper which has already produced three winners. Dark Winter finished second to Symphony In White, who looks like a talented filly in the making, and she should fight out the finish.
Watch the betting for any support for the first timers including 6 MISS WORLD Devon Pretorius: He drops back to m, drops in class and is ultimately taking on a field where some of the dangers are younger horses in their first run out the maidens carrying 60kgs. He should be the one to beat.
However, 3 LUCE VERDE is having his third run after a rest and holds strong form heading into this race. Devon Pretorius: Off the same weight, he returns to the maiden division and must be respected.
He drops back to m and must be a big runner once again. The two fillies in the race based on the best weighted column alone must be huge runners especially 5 SUPREME DREAM.
She finished 4th in a G3 in her last start with no penalties for that run and carries an even lighter weight here. If he repeats that effort he should be hard to oppose. The obvious danger is 6 AMONG THE CLOUDS who drops in class and has top weight to shoulder.
He has been hinted as a top sprinter in the making and his last win over m was nothing short of impressive. He is also a five furlong specialist with all three wins coming over this distance.
